Wellington County Road 87
This page lists all of the numbered county roads in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. In the late 1990s, when the provincial government downloaded many portions of Ontario highways to the municipalities, Wellington County became responsible for portions of former highways 9, 23, 24 and 25. These are now named 109, 123, 124 and 125 respectively. Currently, five provincial highways run through Wellington County. These are highways 6, 7, 9, 23, and 89. Road numbers in Wellington County mainly follow a system in which the numbers correspond to the township in which the road has its county terminus. Roads 1-6 are in Minto; 7-12 in Mapleton; 14-16 in Wellington North; 17-21 in Centre Wellington; 22-26 in Erin; 27-29 in former Eramosa Township (now a part of Guelph-Eramosa); and 30-41 in former Guelph Township (also now a part of Guelph-Eramosa) and Puslinch, many of which are roads that originate in the City of Guelph. A route (or road) number, designation or abbreviation is an identifying numeric (or alphanumeric) designation assigned by a highway authority to a particular stretch of roadway to distinguish it from other routes and, in many cases, also to indicate its classification (e.g. motorway, primary route, regional road, etc.), general geographical location (in zonal numbering systems) and/or orientation (north-south v. east-west). The numbers chosen may be used solely for internal administrative purposes; however, in most cases they are also displayed on roadside signage and indicated on maps. Guelph-Eramosa, Ontario
Guelph/Eramosa () is a township located in Wellington County, in midwestern Ontario, Canada. It partly encircles the city of Guelph, surrounding it in a continuous arc from approximately northeast to south-southwest of the city. It is part of the Guelph census metropolitan area. History The township was created in 1999 by the merger of the townships of Guelph and Eramosa, as well as parts of Pilkington and Nichol townships. The name Eramosa was derived from the native word ''Un-ne-mo-sah'' (possibly meaning "black dog", "dead dog", or simply "dog"). Eramosa Township was settled primarily by Scots and Irish; in 1841, its population was 935. The mayor of Guelph/Eramosa in 2018 is Christopher White (who was first elected in 2010). Mount Forest, Ontario
Mount Forest is an unincorporated community located at the junction of Highway 6 and Highway 89 in the township of Wellington North, Ontario, Canada. As of the 2011 Canadian census the population of Mount Forest was 4,757 . History Prior to European settlement, present day Mount Forest was prime hunting ground for the Saugeen Ojibway peoples due to its location on the Saugeen River. Because of this, many sacred burial sites are believed to be located in the White Bluffs region of present-day Mount Forest. During the survey of the Garafraxa Colonization Road, constructed from Arthur to Georgian Bay in 1840–48, land was reserved for a settlement. By 1851 a post office was established. The village was originally known as Maitland Hills, because it was believed to be on the Maitland River system. Teviotdale, Ontario
Teviotdale is a community which lies on the border between Perth County and Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. Teviotdale is the most northernly community in Perth County. Businesses The village is home to a truck stop restaurant, gas station, construction company, bakery, automobile repair shop, wood working retail outlet, and animal feed plant. It is also the location of a large Ontario Provincial Police Detachment. History The 1985 International Plowing Match (IPM) was hosted by J.D. Ross & neighbouring farms just outside the village. There was a speedway in Teviotdale that ran from the early 1950s to the early 1960s. It reopened in 1968 and closed again in the early 1970s. Racing was on Sunday afternoons. Palmerston, Ontario
Palmerston (population 2,599) is an unincorporated community in the south end of the town of Minto, in the north part of Wellington County, in Ontario, Canada. History Palmerston was a key division point for the Grand Trunk and later the Canadian National Railway in Southwestern Ontario with 65 subdivisions; Owen Sound, Kincardine, Durham, Fergus, Guelph Junction and Stratford. In its original concept the railroad was to run from Guelph to Southampton, Ontario and would not have gone through Palmerston. Listowel needed to be linked to the railroad and it was decided to bend the route toward Listowel. It was also decided that a yard with maintenance shops would be needed. The mainline under Canadian National ownership became part of the Fergus, Owen Sound and Southampton Subdivisions. Passenger service ceased in 1971. Ayton, Ontario
Ayton is a community in the municipality of West Grey, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. Formerly the seat of local government for the disbanded Normanby Township, it is a rural village on the banks of the South Saugeen River and the center of a prosperous farming area. Located on the intersection of Grey Road 3 and Grey Road 9, Ayton is geographically south of Hanover, southwest of Durham, and a neighbour to Neustadt. West Grey, Ontario
West Grey is a township in the northern area of Southwestern Ontario, Canada, in Grey County spanning across the River Styx, the Rocky Saugeen River, the Beatty Saugeen River, and the South Saugeen River. Clifford, Ontario
Clifford is an unincorporated community in the Town of Minto in Wellington County in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is on Ontario Highway 9 and Coon Creek, a stream in the Saugeen River drainage basin. The village of Clifford was founded around 1855 as Minto Village. Also . After the opening of the post office in 1856, the settlement was renamed Clifford by the first postmaster Francis Brown after Clifford in West Yorkshire, England. Clifford was incorporated as a village in 1873. In 1999, Clifford was amalgamated with Palmerston, Harriston and Minto Township to create Minto. The Hanlon Expressway or Hanlon Parkway is a high-capacity at-grade suburban limited-access road connecting Highway 401 with the city of Guelph in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Ontario. The route travels in a generally north-south direction on the city's west side. Huron County is a county of the province of Ontario, Canada. It is located on the southeast shore of its namesake, Lake Huron, in the southwest part of the province.
